"Web Designers—Beat Out Your Competition and Get the
Best Jobs From Clients"
Discover The Missing
Link
That Many Web Designers Ignore.
It Will
Increase
Your Income,
Build Your Reputation, And
Bring You Closer to Your Clients.
You're a designer, an artiste, a temperamental perfectionist
that dives deep and creates a work of beauty for
your client.
Cheerio, job well done. You and your client are very
happy, looking at that sexy site with cutting edge graphics. Can't
get enough of it. Can't wait 'til it goes live. You're both ecstatic.
But
not for long. Your client may soon be ticked off---and asking you
a lot of difficult questions.
Why? Because beauty is only skin deep. Your client built the site to sell stuff --- a lot of stuff. But
it's not going to happen with this site, because it's missing critical
elements that would have greatly increased its chances of success.
Sound familiar?
This
never would have happened if you understood the principals of internet
marketing.
Once you do, you will notice a transformation in your client
relationships. You'll be speaking their language. Your considerable
design skills will be used to accomplish the ultimate goal of the
site: to make money, lots of it. All of a sudden your clients love
you, and word gets out that you know how to get the job done.
Think Like a Marketer First
and
a Designer Second
The fact is that, those designers who understand the bigger
picture and are able to include the proper marketing components,
have a significant competitive advantage.
Before you even begin to contemplate designing a company’s
Web site you need to understand their marketing... we
are accustomed to designing for the media first and for the
marketing strategies second. No! The marketing strategies
should be the driver. While we certainly
need to maintain some semblance of usability and accessibility,
those considerations should come later...

Would Your Client Send You
On An Important Sales Call?
Sounds a little crazy, doesn't it? Why would your client send his/her
web designer on a critical sales call?
But that is exactly what your client is doing when you design their
site. The site you create for them is the "salesperson" that
is responsible for selling their product or service to every single
prospective buyer that looks at it.
Now, any good salesperson needs to deal with two critical
issues;
How do you get a steady flow of prospects to
consider your product? (A beautiful website that
nobody sees is an expensive waste of time.)
Once prospects are exposed to your product,
how do you convince them to make a purchase?
The study of marketing, and specifically internet marketing, can
answer these questions, and give you a real advantage over other
designers who don't know a squeeze page from a squeeze bottle.
It's not that, as a designer, you'll be responsible
for marketing the sites you create (there may be others involved,
such as copywriters, search engine experts, pay-per-click experts,
etc.), but for many clients, your design decisions will have a tremendous
impact on their site's success.
Who
Am I and Why Am I Talking About This?
My name is Larry Lefkowitz and I've been a professional
web designer for
almost 8 years. I love it. Living and working primarily in the creative
space is very satisfying. Over the years I've created literally hundreds
of websites for every type of client, large and small business, government,
charitable organizations, musicians, you name it. I've also designed
logos, CD covers, product packaging, brochures and banners. I've
done this work almost exclusively on a contract basis to web design
companies. (by the way, I designed and built this site,
of course!)
Yet, over the last couple of years, my eyes have been open to the
critical importance of understanding the principals of internet marketing.
It is the missing link that unlocks the relationship
with your clients, puts you solidly on their sales team and aligns
you with their goals. This translates into more money for your client
and more money for you.
I am not an internet marketing guru, but I have
been exposed to the depth and breadth of this subject, and have
learned many of the concepts and techniques that are key to a successful
internet business. And, as a designer, I can
bridge the gap for you by letting you know what's
out there, and sharing specific ways to implement these concepts
in your website designs.
Can You Answer These
Internet Marketing Questions?
Do you even understand the questions?
How should your client's site be organized to maximize sales?
A single page? Multiple pages? Long sales copy? Short sales copy?
What does the product have to do with this decision.
Should you focus
the site on a single product, or multiple products?
How do visitors eyes move when they visit your site, so you can
decide where to place the most important information?
What colors should you use on the site to maximize sales?
What
is the best design for a "buy now" button?
Should you display advertising on your site? If so, what type,
and where should it go?
What is the importance of copywriting?
What is the best way to write headlines and sub-headlines for
the site?
What is Google AdSense? Should you place it on the site? If
so, where is the most effective place to put it?
Do you need audio and/or video play on your websites?
Should your client build a list? Why?
What is a squeeze page?
What is an auto-responder? Should your client use one? How do
you set one up?
Should you have a list-building opt-in box on your site? If
so, where should you put it? How do you get people to use it?
What is viral marketing, should you use it and how do you implement
this technique?
What is an e-cover, and should you recommend one for your clients
digital products?
Do you know the secrets for creating pages that will enhance
the site's organic search engine positioning?.
What is split-testing? Should your client be doing this?
What is Pay-Per-Click advertising? Who is the leader in this
field? Should your client be using it?
You may be designing eye-catching HTML e-mail templates for a
client campaign, but would a text e-mail sell more items?
How many
links should you have in your navigation bar?
What are the different ways to display
links to affiliate products? Should you cloak them?
If you don't know the answers to the above questions (or don't even
understand the questions), you are leaving money on the table
for you and your client. (Check out course at bottom of this page
for answers to most of these questions)
A core responsibility of the designer's job is to present
information in a way that is both accessible and aesthetic.
Sometimes, a graphic designer produces a piece purely from
inspiration for self-satisfaction, or entertainment, but many
work in the industry for clients who often wish to
promote, advertise or publicize a certain topic or product.

The Gold Rush All Over Again
Like the California Gold
Rush, hundreds of thousands of people are streaming onto the internet
in search of their fame and fortune. Every single one of them is
looking for two things;
A website (or many websites)
traffic for their web sites
sales
once people get there
Do you know who made the real money during
the Gold Rush? It was the entrepreneurs
who provided goods and services to the gold prospectors (very few
prospectors made any money at all).
As a designer, you're in a position to provide services to the
hundreds of thousands of internet prospectors. But unlike the gold
rush, your knowledge of internet marketing can help your client find
gold where there wasn't any before.
Your Own Business Will Benefit Greatly
You're running a business too. Just
like your clients, you have a website, need traffic and
want to convert prospects into paying clients. Understanding the
secrets of internet marketing will help get more people to your website,
and, once they are there, your new skills will help convert lookers
to buyers.
There Can
Be Some
Extremely
Exciting,
Highly Lucrative
Times
Ahead For You
The internet marketing field is now one of the
most dynamic and exciting phenomena on the internet. It's
filled with a remarkable variety of products created by often brilliant
people who are generating hundreds of millions of dollars in sales.
In this arena, new discoveries are emerging at breakneck speed,
with everyone trying to keep up with rapidly advancing technology,
the dynamic online marketplace and the growing understanding of
what is possible on the internet. If you choose, you can
get and stay on the cutting edge of this remarkable wave, have
the time of your life, truly help your clients and rake in ever
increasing amounts of cash.

An Excellent Internet Marketing Crash Course
If you want a quick education the basic principals
of internet marketing, one course stands out in terms of breadth
of information, value, reputation and timeliness (it's updated
every year). That course is "The
Insider Secrets to Marketing Your Business on The Internet --
Version 2008"from the Internet Marketing Center.
This course has been around since the year 2000, and has a great
reputation. Since things change so quickly on the internet, I've
purchased it two years in a row so I can have the latest updated
version.
This course quickly exposes you
to the most important concepts and techniques for
creating and promoting websites. It has many teachings that
you can put to work immediately in your website designs.
A lot of the course information will be valuable no matter what
type of clients you work with. If you work with small clients,
you often have much more responsibility and influence on various
aspects of the sites, including copywriting, search engine
optimization, pay-per-click advertising, etc. This course will
be worth it's weight in gold by immediately giving you
actionable info you can introduce into your client dialog.
On the other side, no course like this can go into super depth
on any one topic. This course provides a great overview of internet
marketing, with lots of practical information you can use right
away. However, if you want to delve deeper into any one topic,
such as copywriting, pay-per-click advertising or search engine
optimization, there are other courses that specialize in these
topics and go into much greater detail (and often cost ten times
as much or more than this one).
Here is the outline for the 2008 course
below (I've highlighted some items that would immediately increase
your value as a designer if you understood them);

Many sites require a shopping cart. But not all carts are created
equal. One cart was designed by internet marketers for internet marketers,
and it contains many features that will help your clients sell more,
over and over again.
Just these features alone make it worth it's weight in gold;
Full Featured Autoresponders integrated with the sales database
Affiliate tracking system
Upsell module
Shopping carts are complex pieces of software, and time is money. Why not
learn the best from the beginning? Several pricing and feature levels allow
you to start basic and upgrade later.
